Five Ways To Look After Your Wellbeing During Lockdown

Life can feel difficult at the moment, there are lots of things out there that we can’t control. During this time, you may be bored, frustrated or lonely. You may also feel worried, anxious, or concerned about your health or that of those close to you. With that in mind, here are five ways to look after your wellbeing during lockdown.

1. Set up a routine

For those of you who did go back to work and are now back working from home. Or perhaps if you are now unable to work, setting up a routine will help bring a sense of purpose to your days.

Set your alarm. Get up and dressed. Have a plan of what you want and need to achieve for the day ahead.

I run a pub, so lockdown for me means a completely different routine. I am a morning person, so I like to try to get up earlier and get things done. Otherwise, I procrastinate and the next thing it is late afternoon, and I haven't got anything done!

Make sure you include some downtime reward activities—for example, box sets or a series you wanted to start. I did a recent post on 10 feel-good TV and films for a self-care night if that gives you some inspiration.

I also find that journaling helps me to understand and then manage my feelings, which is especially important during these times.

2. Cook healthy meals

Look after your body by cooking healthy meals. Often an excuse for not eating well is that we just simply don't have the time.

Lockdown should hopefully give you the time. Even better cook once and eat multiple times by taking advantage of batch cooking your meals.

3. Exercise

Exercise is a great way to look after your wellbeing during lockdown Whether a walk, run or cycle, breathing some fresh air is a great way to give you an endorphin rush.

There are plenty of other ways to exercise at home, too, for example on YouTube, Yoga With Adriene has videos for every level, including complete beginners.

Or do some energetic cleaning to get your heart rate up. A total winner as you have a clean house and you have got some daily exercise in!

4. Reduce your alcohol intake

I don't know about you, but I spent a lot of time in the garden during the first lockdown. We had such glorious weather, I would have the odd glass of wine with lunch, then wine in the evening.

I really don't want to spend this lockdown in the same situation, so I've made the decision not to drink during this lockdown.

5. Develop healthy habits

Develop healthy habits that you can continue after lockdown. For example, have you ever meant to get around to learning a language?

It is easy to spend any free time you have developing a habit. It is believed it can take around 30 days to form a new habit.

After the end of the first lockdown, I wrote a list of all of the 6 Habits I want to keep after lockdown.

Two habits I wish I had formed during the last lockdown, include Mindfulness and yoga.

I started a four-week mindfulness course from Be Mindful, and I didn't stick to it properly. I have unlimited access to the course, so I want to start again. As for yoga, I was lazy and enjoying sitting in the garden a little too much! Wish me luck!!

How are you going to look after your wellbeing during lockdown?

  1. This is a lovely post Helen, with some really useful tips to help well-being during lockdown. During the last lockdown I continued working all the way through but this time I have been furloughed. I am actually really enjoying having some time off work and being able to do the things that I enjoy doing. However I can understand how some people might feel in a prolonged situation. I hope that your business has not suffered too badly this year and that you are staying safe and well xx

    1. Thank you so much, Fiona! I really hope you are staying safe and enjoying your time on furlough. It will be great to spend time doing things you enjoy! We are doing takeaways Friday and Saturday nights so we have some normality :) xx
