Why You Should Regularly Review Your Goals

Are you the type of person who sets a small number of goals at the start of the year? Or, do you prefer to set goals on a more regular basis? Whichever you choose, you should regularly review your goals to make sure that they are still relevant. Otherwise, you're effectively missing a valuable tool that will enable you to go after and achieve the life you want.

I spotted a few bloggers setting out their goals for the month, and I thought to myself when the last time I even reviewed the goals I set in January? Let alone create new monthly goals.

I realised it had been months since I actually looked at my goals. In all honesty, I could probably only have told you a few. As for the rest, I couldn't remember. I had no idea if they were even relevant anymore.

That made me think...

Why you should regularly review your goals:

1. When did you last review your goals?

Personally, I would usually just get to the end of the year and then look back to see if I actually achieved any of my goals for the year.

If I hadn't achieved something, then guess what? I would just pop them back onto next years goals list. I had "Be more organised" on my list for about six years running!

Not only is "Be more organised" extremely vague (which we will get to in a minute) but it was a pointless goal if I just evaluated whether I'd achieved it at the end of the year.

Instead, I should have looked at how I would accomplish the goal and then doing a regular review to see where I was heading towards achieving that goal.

2. Why do you need to regularly review your goals?

Reviewing goals frequently enables us to remember the goals we set ourselves and to, more importantly, remember the 'why' we set those goals in the first place.

A regular review of your goals enables you to work towards your goals and to make them realities. Thoughts can become actions. As a result, we can reach our goals faster.

3. Are your goals still important to you?

An important reason why you should regularly review your goals is to see if the goal is still relevant.

Look at why you set that goal in the first place? Usually, one of the main objectives of writing a goal is to determine the desired outcome.

When you regularly review your goals, you can easily spot if a goal is no longer relevant to you. Say, for example, the goal was to achieve something by a specific date which has now passed. Or your circumstances have now changed so that goal is no longer relevant.

If your life has changed since you set your initial goal, the goal may no longer be relevant. One of my goals was to spend less and save more. That was before the Pandemic. I haven't had the opportunity to save as I have no regular income, but I also haven't been spending either.

4. What do you need to do to get back or stay on track?

If your goal is still meaningful to you and you have just veered off track, what action steps can you take to course correct?

Is it like me that you just can't remember your goals because you don't look at or review them often enough?

Alternatively, perhaps you aren't spending enough time dedicated to pursuing your goals?

5. Reading your goals daily should motivate you

A regular review of your goals should revive the drive you initially felt. It should act as a catalyst to activate that energy and provide motivation to take steps to achieve those goals. 

This review will hopefully ultimately put you in the best position to successfully execute the plan you've written for yourself.

If the action you take to achieve the goal becomes second nature, then it is more likely to become a reality.

6. Are you on track to reach your goals?

Firstly, you need to establish if you set out the steps you need to take to arrive at your desired outcome.

Sometimes that new year buzz feeling may lead to a whole host of unobtainable, impractical goals. Especially if you don't set SMART goals.

A SMART goal is something that is: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.

Compare the goal of "Walk more" with a SMART goal of "Walk for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week". 

The second example allows us to use a specific way of tracking to see if we are achieving that goal, which brings me to the next point.

7. How do you track your goals?

You want to ensure you're on track, so how do you record your goals?

Mine is in a journal. I thought writing in my journal would make me more accountable. But it's pointless having them written down if you don't actually revisit them.

With the example above "Walk for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week". Where are you tracking this, so you know you're achieving your goal? Perhaps in a habit tracker section of your journal or an app.

8. Are you making progress towards your goals?

The final reason why you should regularly review your goals is to see if you are making progress in achieving your goals.

The more tasks we accomplish, and the more considerable progress we experience towards reaching our goals, the more our resolve will increase.

When we feel an increase in personal value, our sense of worth keeps us happy. Think of someone who is trying to increase their basic fitness levels. For example, they start by saying "I want to take a brisk walk for 30 minutes a day for one month".

Does that person stop after a month? Usually not, but depending on fitness levels, the person has probably got an increased level of fitness and may perhaps consider running and now feels motivated and looks for other challenges, such as running a 5K.

I took a quick look back at the goals I set myself for this year and what I wanted to achieve this year.

My goals at the start of the year where:

1. Appreciating every day
On the whole, I did journal every day and record a 1 Second Everyday clip.

2. Be more confident
I worked hard on trying to work on my confidence - I even joined my first Twitter chat in about three years.

Tacking my social anxiety. Again, due to the Pandemic, I haven't physically seen enough people in order actually view how my social anxiety is going.

3. Live a more simple and organised life
I also managed to maintain the clutter and live a more intentional life. I managed to use up lots of the backup and not hoard new ones. For the first time in years, I now have lots of empty drawers.

Although I did buy some notebooks, so that stash is still quite significant!

4. Start saving and spending less
As I mentioned earlier, I stopped saving, but partly because we aren't earning anything. However, I gave up on the 1p Challenge in February. It just got too complicated as I would miss days and then try to work out what I needed to put in.

On the whole, I was able to spend less. Although I did buy the unnecessary notebooks, as I mentioned.

5. Making more time for self-care
I've read lots more books than I usually would, but I've had a lot of time on my hands. The weather has also been fantastic. My Goodreads challenge is 20 for the year and it's going well so far. 

I did start a mindfulness course, but I need to put more effort into making practise part of my daily routine.

By having the change to review my goals, I realise that most of them aren't SMART goals on reflection. I can now break the goals down and explore how they correlate to achieving my dreams :)

  1. I'm not bad at weekly goals, but the overarching ones are harder to keep track of. I use a planner and it's solid enough for the week, but the monthly or yearly goals get lost. I am still searching for that perfect planner so I can manage it all.

  2. Oooh this one really caught me out. I started the year with goals for 2020, then goals for January... and I haven't looked at them since. This has definitely made me think I need to re-examine them and look at what I actually want to achieve at the moment. Great post - thanks for the reminder!

  3. This was such a great post! My daily / weekly goals are always pinned on my pin-board but while reading your post I remembered something... 3 years ago I wrote a list with my 100 goals that I want to achieve in my life.
    Now I feel, it's time to take this list and check it out - what I have done, what I don't want anymore and what I would love to include! Thanks!

  4. Thank for this! This somehow reminds me of some things that I want to achieve. I often check my progress but sometimes I let things happen and do my thing. Hopefully we get theresults that we want. ❤

  5. This is a great post and very true. I review my goals every Sunday so I start the week with a fresh head and accurate goals. I also set myself mini goals for the day so I can spread out my time and make goals achievable! Thank you for sharing this post,
