Five Things To Achieve In 2020

Are you a person who likes to make New Year's resolutions or just set some good goals and intentions for the year? The new year is the perfect time to look back at what was good, or not so good, then work out what you would like to happen this year.

I recently wrote a post about how I want to get back into journaling. I find that writing things down is hugely beneficial for my mental health. To kick the year off, I set myself the challenge of journaling January with 31 journaling prompts.

The first day was to write five things you want to achieve this year. Why do you want to achieve them, and how will you go about achieving them?

I don't know about you, but I always feel slightly more accountable when I actually write out my goals. It's also an excellent way to look back at the end of the year and see if you achieved them. Or whether your priorities and life changed so much that some of the goals ended up irrelevant. It gives you a great place to see where you need to start now.

Here's what I wrote in my journal for 2020, which might give you some inspiration for things to achieve in 2020:

1. Appreciating every day

I aim to do this by daily journaling and recording 1 second. As I mentioned, I find journaling is brilliant for my mental health. I know that I'm stressed when I don't do it. I didn't write in my journal for much of October, November, and much of December, for example. I just use a daily diary I got from the Poundshop, which works perfectly apart from you have to write less on Saturday and Sunday.

1 Second Everyday is a free app you can download and then record two seconds per day. I started it in July 2018, and it was great to mash the clips together and watch them over again. Again, as with journaling, I forget to add videos when I'm stressed.

2. Be more confident

This is a two-pronged goal. On the one hand, it's about tackling my social anxiety. Working in a pub with social anxiety is an interesting one at times!

Also, I want to be more confident with regards to my own self-worth. I've experienced a few things recently that have made me realise I can be a bit of a walkover if I'm not careful and this partly stems from my own lack of self-worth and feeling like I don't deserve better. This needs to change. I want to be more assertive and stop putting up with unnecessary s**t.

3. Live a more simple and organised life

If you've read my blog for a while, you'll know that I really want to focus on living a more simple and more intentional life. The clutter has been minimised, but there is still a long way to go in terms of reducing the excessive amounts of things I own. For example, I have literally so many backups still to be used. I never need a notebook or shower gel for a long time!

This Christmas we didn't exchange presents (apart from with Dan's mum, dad and nanna) and not bringing any new items into the house has already helped towards this goal.

4. Start saving and spending less

I mean this more from a personal point of view and in terms of tying in with the last goal, but also seeing where we can make savings from a business point of view. For example, I didn't for one minute think that the supermarket would be cheaper for some things than the wholesaler, but there are savings to be made and bargains to be had if you're prepared to look.

In terms of savings, I don't yet have an income from the pub. It is very much a take-take relationship that we have at the moment! But I saw a fun 1p challenge where you put 1p on the 1st January, 2p on the 2nd January and so on. Apparently, you end up with £668.96 at the end of the year as it's a leap year. You can do this physically in a jar or transfer to something like a Monzo account, whichever works best for you.

I've also set myself a no/low buy challenge. Basically, I will aim only to buy essential things. You can read the rules I've set myself here.

5. Making more time for self-care

For me, self-care is writing, reading and relaxing. Writing is partly journaling, but also writing the blog and interacting with other bloggers. Reading is self-explanatory, but also in terms of reading for pleasure and for personal growth. In terms of relaxing, I want to include more mindfulness and yoga. I've found a few local places offering yoga classes, so it's just a case of getting off my bum and going to the class.

  1. Love the post and the goals that you are working on, in particular the savings one. I started something similar last year, any change left over from my purse goes in a jar,and then back in the bank when times are financially tight. And you know you can get through your social anxiety. Have faith my friend xx
